Hinduism is a religion professed by a people called Hindus, the vast majority of whom live in the Indian subcontinent. Although Hinduism is a religion, it is much more. It includes not only theology but also social institutions, a legal tradition, a vast body of literature and art, some science, and a great varied mass of philosophy. Hinduism has no formalized creeds nor standard forms of worship. Hindu theology varies greatly. Generally it is polytheistic. Hinduism has developed a hereditary caste system as its social structure. Man' duty is to satisfy his caste rules and fulfill his caste functions, to honor the gods, to observe the ceremonies that ideally accompany every aspect of life. (A.)
Islam is the religion of those who follow the prophet Mohammed. The name is an Arabic word that may be translated "submission," "surrender," or "commitment". Islam describes the proper relationship between men and their god Allah. Followers of Islam are known as Muslims. The Arabian peninsula, where Islam was born, is one of the most forbidding places on earth for the maintenance of human life. Mohammed's message centered on the idea of one god Allah, who created the world and who governs it. The sacred book of the Muslims, the Koran, is composed of the revelations that came to Mohammed in piecemeal fashion at various times after his call to prophethood. "Koran" means something recited or read. (A.)
Buddhism is not universally practiced in the same way. Different areas show different adjustments both to indigenous religions and to regional ideas. The founder Siddhartha Gautama was born in 6th century B.C. The religion Gautama preached was a kind of protestantism aimed against the religious-social monopoly of the Brahmanic caste of priests, who long had held as their special domain the proper ordering of the cosmos, which they alone, as proprietors of the cosmic law, were qualified to oversee. The kernel of the whole Buddhist system is embodied in the Four Noble Truths: (1) all existence is suffering; (2) there is a cause for this suffering; (3) the cause may be brought to an end; and (4) the discipline necessary to bring it to an end. (A.)
Catholicism states that the apostles lefts bishops as their successors and it is their mission to teach all nations and preach the gospel to every creature. The church frequently draws upon the Bible, given to the church for the fulfillment of its teaching ministry. Together with the Bible, through not separate from it, is sacred traditions. Basically, sacred traditions originated with the apostles, but it "develops in the church with the help of the Holy Spirit" Catholic doctrine holds that the church is hierarchically structured and all revelation was complete at the death of the last apostle. (A.)
Shinto, which literally means the way or teaching of the gods, is loosely organized, indigenous religious cult of Japan. While Shinto has no founder, no official sacred scriptures, and no dogma, it has preserved its ethos throughout the ages. In the modern period it has been used as a tool of ethnocentric nationalism and chauvinistic militarism, and it is often thought of in these terms by outsiders. Throughout history Shinto has been conspicuously indifferent to any theoretical systemization of its beliefs. The early Japanese by and large did not distinguish between the celestial and the earthly domain. Their religion was a simple polytheistic nature worship, emphasizing gratitude to the beneficent forces of nature, while also to some degree appeasing the malevolent forces. (B.)
Judaism It is not uncommon to regard Judaism, or the Hebrew religion, primarily based on the Old Testament, as coming to an end with the rise of Christianity. By Judaism is meant the religion that, going back to the Hebrew Scriptures, extends beyond their chronological limits down to modern times-the religion of the Jews. Judaism rests on two basic doctrines: (1) monotheism, the belief in the one and only God; (2) the covenant election of Israel to be the bearers of this belief. (B.)
Baha'i faith is the name of the religion founded in the 19th century by Mirza Husain 'Ali, known as Baha'u'llah (q.v. ;"Glory of God"). The cornerstone of Baha'i belief is the conviction that the Bab and Baha'u'llah are manifestations of God, who in his essence is unknowable. Baha'u'llah's peculiar function was to overcome the disunity of religions and establish a universal faith. (B.)
Confucianism is, and has been for more than 2,000 years the dominant philosophical system in China and the controlling factor in many aspects of Chinese culture. Although Confucianism has sometimes been called a religion, Confucius was not a religious leader in the usual sense. He considered a large part of the religion of his day to be sheer superstition, and condemned many of its practices. Chinese philosophy has given relatively little attention to metaphysics, epistemology and logic. (B.)
And in all things that I have said unto you
be circumspect:
and make no mention of the name of other gods,
neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
